An abstract cover for the research section

Our research standard, and why the section is empty

We have published no original research yet. This page exists to state what we will publish and what it will have to satisfy, because the alternative is a research section that fills up with material nobody can check.

The standard

Every publication will carry its methodology, its sample and how it was obtained, the data itself in a form that can be downloaded and re-analysed, its limitations stated plainly, the date it was conducted, and a record of any subsequent revision. A finding without all six is not published here. That is a higher bar than most industry research clears, and it is the bar that makes a number worth citing.

What we intend to cover

The questions we are best placed to answer concern how Kenyan businesses actually operate: technology adoption among small businesses, how eTIMS onboarding has gone in practice and where it has been hardest, what payment methods businesses take and how they reconcile them, what stock control looks like in trades where nobody has ever formalised it, and what business software actually costs a small Kenyan business to run.

Why the section is empty

Because we have not done the work yet. Publishing plausible-looking statistics would be easy, would probably be cited, and would be indistinguishable from fabrication. Every number on this site is either sourced to someone who measured it or absent, and that rule does not relax for our own section.

If you want to collaborate

If you have data on Kenyan small-business operations and want it analysed and published to this standard, or you want to run a survey jointly, write to the address on the contact page.
